Infection?: The description you give suggests that this may be an abscess (collection of pus under the skin). These occur commonly in the axillary region (armpit) and groin and usually present as red, tender areas of swelling that can become quite large. She should see her doctor who can confirm the diagnosis, possibly with ultrasound if necessary, and if it is an abscess, it should be drained.

Hidradenitis: Sounds like she has hidradenitis, or inflammation of the sweat glands. If she has fever, tender, redness it might brewing an infection & need antibiotics. She should see a doctor soon to rule this out. A general or plastic surgeon can help take care of it if it belongs a long term problem.
