Come and go, but...: Tongue is known to have many variations with pigmenting, size, appearance, & not always due to disease.Other causes of tongue that looks patchy include: lichen planus (responds to steroids), white sponge nevus (familial, benign, permanent), smoker's leukoplakia (2% risk of cancer, needs biopsy), hairy leukoplakia (due to epsteinbarr virus), warts (due to papillomavirus), "thrush" (rx antifungals).

Yes: You are born w this. However it is worse at some times than others. As an adult it can become better w time. Stress , hormonal changes, and certain foods can cause it to worsen. It is not a dangerous condition.

It comes and goes!: Those demarcated red areas that vary on the upper surface of the tongue get their name because they look like a MAP outline, hence georgraphic tongue. They vary in position, and can disappear and and return. They are benign, and yes you may have them for the rest of your life.

Geographic Tongue: Your doctor may recommend medications to manage discomfort or sensitivity: over-the-counter pain relievers, mouth rinses with an anesthetic, antihistamine mouth rinses, corticosteroid ointments or rinses. Since the condition typically resolves on its own and has an unpredictable course, you may not be able to tell if the symptomatic treatments are actually working.

It comes and goes : It is harmless, benign and it is not linked to any other condition. It has a white or light-colored border, it varies in size, shape and color. It moves around and it comes and goes or changes very quickly in days, weeks, or months. It could be from sensitivity to hot, spicy, or acidic foods, cigarette smoke or even toothpaste. You should see a dentist/md to rule out any other condition

Could be either: It can come and go, or be present from now on. Only the symptoms are treated. If there is no discomfort, nothing is done. The good news is there is nothing to worry about.
