Anti-histamines: Itching from an allergic response is caused at least in part by the release of histamine from mast cells. Treatment often involves the use of anti-histamines such as loratidine or cetirizine. The dose often has to be increased above that usually recommended but the limiting factor is how sleepy the patient is.
