Had a mri and it said small bony fragment inferior to the lateral malleolus is either developmental or related to old trauma. what is the meaning.

Either: Probably an old sprain. If it does not hurt or affect you, then you probably do not have to have it checked. If it hurts, then ask the doc who ordered the mri- they should be able to ttell you exactly what it is and the meaning.

Nothing bad: From what you wrote it sounds like the radiologist is describing a small fragment of bone at the tip of your fibula ( outer bone of your ankle) this is either a bit of calcification from an old ankle sprain or some people do not fuse the very tip of that bone when they are young and it looks like a loose fragment. These are very common and generally need no treatment unless they are painful.
