Inflammation: Arthritis implies cartilage breakdown. You body doesn't like this and so reacts with inflammation of the surrounding tissues and increased fluid production in an attempt to lubricate the joint that is breaking down. The extra fluid in both the joint and soft tissues are the perceived as swelling.
