Depends: Which antidepressant? The goal of any antidepressant is to decrease symptoms of depression such as decreased self esteem, loss of interest, motivation and energy and sometimes lack of a will to live. All antidepressants can have side effects, the goal is to get maximal benefit with minimal side effects. Most antidepressants take 2-4 wks for maximal benefit, but you may see some benefit sooner.
