A member asked:

87-year-old mother sleeps 90 percent of the time; recuperating from pneumonia, c diff and uti. is this sleeping problem normal?

NO, of course not: We do not know why we sleep for about one third of our lives (approx 8 hours/night). It must have somethihg to do with energy conservation. At 87 recovery is slow from pneumonia and her sleep may be how her system is slowly recuperating.

Need attention: Pneumonia and c. Diff are serious infectious process and patient as old as 89, needs sometimes to recuperate, but sleeping 90% needs evaluation.

No, not normal: I answered another question about your mother elsewhere. There are hypoactive deliriums where the person sleeps a lot when systemically ill. She need to be seen, or a doctor needs to come see her to check status of the treatments she's receiving. If she's on any sedating medicines, the effects may be much stronger when physically ill than they would otherwise. Please contact her doctor today.

Abnormal: Your mother is getting over three problems, on top of any other chronic issues she already has...So she will be sleepy and one needs to pay attention to this. If not med- related, she should be getting more spry if her infections are under control. Best of luck.
