Delirium?: Elderly people are vulnerable to mental status changes that may come temporarily with other systemic illness (like bladder infections). Delirium is an acute mental status change, and is shown by confusion, disorientation to time & place, etc. There can be hallucinations & paranoia also. If your mom's cognitive function was intact before her illness, she may gradually recover as it resolves.

Possibly: The aging brain has less reserve and deals with the stress of medical illness less efectively. Medical illness can cause delirum, an acute change in cognition- that is usually reversible- but may take months to resolve. However, illness may unmask mild memory loss and at times the cognitive impairment may be permament in the frail elderly-has there been a new stroke?
