Call Your Doctor: A child with blood in the stool should always be examined. Some common causes include food allergies, constipation and infection. Bring the diaper to your office visit. Your doctor may want to test the stool for infection.

Anus has fissures?: In a healthy young baby, anal fissures (little cracks in the skin of the anus) can happen after a forceful pooping (poop need not be firm), or after passing a firm poop. When a fissure happens, there may be streaks or spots of blood on the poop. Because young babies poop often, a fissure may take a while to heal up. The parent should talk with a doctor if blood is seen on the poop day after day.

Don't know.: Your pediatrician would be the right person to explore the cause.

Depends on situation: Young infants often respond to the natural softeners in full strength apple or prune juice, 1-2 oz offered 1-2x daily, but this takes 2-3 days to work & often needs to be continued daily. Older kids need too avoid applesause, rice cereal & bananas that tend to firm stools in any amount extra fluids help as does the above juices.Occasionally I use MiraLAX (polyethylene glycol) in infants as a gentil wetting agent.

Contact your Dr.: This is urgent- blood in stool needs immediate eval - especially in a baby. - there are other important questions to be asked such as age of baby- any birth complications, maturity-etc but it wont change your need to take baby in - so please make an appoint to be seen today if you have not already. Good luck.

Any reason why my 11 month-old babie's stool has spots of blood in it? He's been struggling with fever from Thursday.

Depends: Strings of bright red blood attached to the outside of a hard or bulky stool suggest a scratch/tear in the outlet from a bulky or hard stool. Id it is blobs of blood mixed within the stool it suggests a germ like salmonella/shigella may be the cause of an infectious process. An exam and testing may be needed to sort that out.

My babies lips are turning a dark color and he is just over 1 month old, also he seems to be struggling to stool but there is no blood and the poo is not hard when he eventually stools.

It happens: The best way to verify a baby has good circulation/oxygen is to put a fingertip below an eye & tug down until the inner lid is seen. Pink=good oxygen. Lips may be chilled or darker occasionally as baby tries to hold on to their heat. The same thing can be seen with fingers/toes when exposed. Babies have soft/weak belly muscles & often use fussing/breathing muscles to push food along/poop.
