I was told not to use harsh cleaners as it can eat away at the night guard. can i use peroxide instead?

NO: Depending on the material, peroxide may be too caustic. Night guards may be made out of hard plastic, soft rubber material or a combination of the two. Always use cool water, hot or warm water may warp them and affect the fit. Use a clear antibacterial soap, and rinse thoroughly. Tinted (colored) soap may discolor your guard. Store it dry in the supplied case. Keep away from children & pets.

Dilute it!: 1 part hydrogen peroxide to 2 parts water can be safe. Also, stay away from alcohol-based mouthwashes (even diluted), since the alcohol dries out the plastic, making it easier to fracture and break. I recommend denture cleansers for my mouthguard patients. They are safe to use and leave the mouthguards with a mild decent taste.

Yes: But a better way to keep it clean is to use denture cleaner such as efferdent and soak your night guard during the day. Just be sure to rinse it with cold water before you put it in for the night.
