Depends: Read the i pledge book for all the side effects and decide if the timeing is right for you. Good candidates love it and have gotten their acne under control. Laser skin care is very helpful with acne and if you do a series of those treatments it will lower your dosage needed for complete acne control.

Define "safe": The medication wouldn't be allowed on the market unless it passed through the vigorous FDA approval and product surveillance process. Its ability to be a winder drug for some who suffer otherwise is well known, but its potential for serious side effects is also present. Selective use and continuous monitoring for side effects is needed in this drug more than many others.

Risks vs. benefits: Every drug has side effects but the hazards of Accutane are greater than most, with some of the side effects being life-threatening- see https://tinyurl.com/kqxj95d Obviously not everyone has serious side effects and it has helped many but I feel it should only be used for severe cases that have not responded to anything else. See https://tinyurl.com/yaezjt58 and consider seeing an integrative Dr.

Weight the risks: Do what you have to. Acne is a grave social and professional liability and severe cases will mutilate you for life. If your disease has not responded to simpler measures, and you're willing to comply with the rigorous self-care that goes with this medicine, it is well worth the unpleasantness and in fact the risk is commensurate with other familiar medicines. Be brave and best wishes.

Pretty safe: Accutane has some issues, especially birth defects if taken while pregnant, but most of the other popularized "dangers" are significantly overblown. Still, it must be prescribed by a doctor with experience in its use, and you must join a registry (ipledge) as an added precaution against pregnancy.
