Get checked: New onset clicking, popping or locking is a sign of potential mechanical pathology (a loose piece) in the knee. As we get older arthritis may present with a grinding sensation but usually not locking.

Several things.: It could be a tracking issue of the kneecap, or a meniscal tear, or a loose body, just to name a few possibilities. See an orthopedic knee specialist for proper evaluation.

Knee injury: Many knees may have clicking and popping which may not be of concern. Pain ,swelling, stiffness, locking , or feelings that the knee is unstable are more bothersome and should encourage an evaluation by a knee specialist.
