2 to 12 days, but--: If someone hasn't been exposed to herpes before, it may take about 2 to 12 days to have an outbreak once exposure occurs. However, a person can become infected without showing any symptoms, becoming a carrier. In this case an outbreak may never occur, or perhaps it will happen many years later.
