How long do you have to be on birth control in order for it to be an effective contraceptive method?

One pack: If you start your pill on the day that your period starts, then it works immediately. If you do a sunday start, then it can take up to two weeks.

Depends : Assuming you are referring to birth control pill, effectiveness depends on start date. If the new package was started within 4-5 days of onset of the last menses, then it should be effective immediately. If started mid cycle, alternate protection should be used for the first month.
