No safety: When having unprotected sex, there is no "safe waiting period" between partners. Whenever you have unprotected sex, you are exposed to every person your partner has ever had, no matter how long ago it was. You need to be evaluated and tested for stds, treated appropriately and then start having safer, protected sex.

It depends...: ...on lots of factors. The other person's sexual history? Have both of you been tested for common STDs since sex with other people and before sex with each other? Some STDs can be transmitted months or years after being infection (e.g. HPV, herpes), but most are easily cured or are cleared up by the immune system over weeks to months. If in doubt, use condoms until both persons tested.
