A member asked:

What does "pumping the reservoir" of a vp shunt really mean? is it possible to know exactly when it's draining?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Pumping a shunt: A vp shunt should not be pumped except under a neurosurgeon's care. No, it is not possible to know exactly when it is draining except with highly sophisticated equipment. Many of the shunts today do not have a reservoir and may not be pumped. Pumping may cause over draining and lead to serious complications.
