A member asked:

Can someone tell if they're still dependent on vp shunt by pumping it? if so, how? and what does tapping the shunt mean?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Shunt pumping: It is not a good idea to pump your own shunt. If it is not working correctly pumping the shunt under supervision of a neurosurgeon may be required. This is temporary until the shunt can be revised. Tapping a shunt means placing a small needle into the shunt reservoir and drawing out a small amount of fluid usually to culture to see if the fluid is infected.
