Shunt pumping: It is not a good idea to pump your own shunt. If it is not working correctly pumping the shunt under supervision of a neurosurgeon may be required. This is temporary until the shunt can be revised. Tapping a shunt means placing a small needle into the shunt reservoir and drawing out a small amount of fluid usually to culture to see if the fluid is infected.
