Protective lumps: Probably a lymph gland that pop up in children secondary to upper respiratory infections, sore throats, running noses and colds. The lymph glands serve as protection for lower tract lung infections. In other words they are part of a protective process.They arise more frequently in the winter and they take as long as six weeks to shrink and disappear.

Could be many things: You should have a pediatrician look at your child. It could be nothing or something very serious, so guessing without an in person evaluation would be down right dangerous. Good luck from nyc.
