Arthritis/tendonitis: Hi donna! it is common in women in their 40s and 50s to get arthritis in the base of the thumb which can cause symptoms similar to yours including trouble with opening jars, etc.. There is also a common tendonitis, called dequervain's tenosynovitis, which may be the cause of your pain. Lastly, if the thumb catches and locks with motion, it could be a trigger thumb.
