It is not common: Many factors contribute to a retinal detachment. Trauma and high myopia (nearsightedness), are probably the 2 greatest factors that could be present in a 17 year old. The only way to diagnose a retinal detachment is to have a complete dilated eye examination.

Not common: Somewhat uncommon to have an rd at this age. Family history, trauma, high myopia, lattice or thinning of the retina are risk factors that could lead to detachment at an early age. Most detachments in this age group are traumatic (due to trauma).
