Severe pain: A dislocation of a shoulder is a very painful event- typically caused by a traumatic injury. You will not be able to move the shoulder without significant pain. A dislocated shoulder requires a manual reduction, usually done in an emergency room setting.

Red flags: There are some clues as to whether your shoulder is dislocated or not. 1. Did you have an injury? 2. If not do you have a history of shoulder dislocation? 3. Do you have significantly limited range of motion in your shoulder (not does it hurt to move but you just cannot move it)? 4. Do you notice a difference in the contour of your shoulder as compared to other side? If yes to any -?Dislocation.

Depends: A dislocated shoulder is usually a traumatic event. You could also just subluxate your shoulder and also have pain. Other things that can feel like something is popping in and out of place is a rotator cuff tear or a subluxating biceps tendon.

Shoulder dislocation: Get good exam as well as an axillary view xray series. See and orthopedic surgeon if dislocated.
