Woke up with right ankle swelling with no possible trauma..what can cause this?

Heart, Liver, Kidney: Disease and decreased function as well as increased salt intake, stopping diuretics, will all lead to swelling, but usually involve both legs. One side, maybe from pressure on the veins draining that side. Do you have any swelling in the groin/belly on that side? Worth a visit to the doctor.
