Depends: The colon naturally produces mucus. With colitis, the colon is infected, inflamed, or irritated and can produce excess mucus to protect itself. Sometimes, severe constipation can also cause excess mucus. Your primary care doctor may choose to perform stool studies to help diagnose the problem.
