A 28-year-old female asked:
6.2 cm complex liver cyst , what is the treatment for it?

Excision: Most liver cysts are benign and require no treatment at all. About 1 in 20 people have liver cysts.
If they are enlarging or symptomatic (pain, fullness, bleeding) treatment is suggested
simple cysts can often be treated by laparoscopic cystotomy
complex cysts carry a higher risk of malignancy. Open resection might be needed.

You need evaluation: Yes, you are appropriately concerned. When you pursue further evaluation, your doctor will want to know your exposure risks, travel history, etc. Also, is this the first time the cyst was identified, or has it enlarged, changed in appearance, or become symptomatic? What liver imaging modality was accomplished? Best of luck with your testing and treatment.

Dr. Myron Arlen answered

Very rare: Liver cysts are not that uncommom with no known causes. They can grow very large and it is unheard of them to rupture. Among the cysts of the liver, one of the rarest types is that caused by blunt trauma to the liver resulting in hematoma and cyst formation.

Probably harmless: How was it discovered? Does it cause you any symptoms/discomfort? You should follow your doctor's advice . If needed, you can consult a hepatologist who will have more experience and better advice than an Internist. Most such cysts remain silent and do not need any intervention till they become symptomatic.
