Yes: Most likely this is a viral illness but depending on your age, it could also be a bacterial infection. Both these problems can be spread from person-to-person. Good handwashing and no kissing/oral/saliva contact until the symtoms resolve. Follow up with a doctor is useful.

Not a big concern: Since coughs and colds are so frequent among patients and health care workrers, you do not need to worry about i9t. If you are concerned you can eiother take a disposable mask and use it when you are in the clinic or carry a hankerchief and use it when you cough. Good luck!
