Allergic reaction: Acute allergy can cause swelling that can block your airway, creating a potentially dangerous situation. Sudden onset after a particular type of food is ingested or medication taken may suggest this. This is an urgent issue requiring immediate attention. If this has been going on for awhile and is more chronic, you may have obstructive pharyngeal anatomy. Which may be associated with apnea.

Angioedema: Do you wake up with a swollen tongue or it just feels that way? Tongue swelling is a serious problem and usually the swelling is not limited to the tongue. Do you take any medications before going to bed? It could be a medication side effect or a hereditary problem. You need to see an allergist.
