A member asked:

I have been taking hydroxizine for angioedema for a year now. what all side effects does this cause and does it cause weight gain and intestinal issue?

Not much: Hydroxyzine is a pretty well tolerated medication. The most common side effect is sleepiness and sometimes feeling dry. I have not seen weight gain as a problem or intestinal issues. And I do prescribe this medication frequently.

NO: But does it help with your angioedema? Do you know what type of angioedema do you have? Idiopathic or hereditary or acquired? Antihistamines do not affect your weight or intestines. A first generation antihistamine called periactin (cyproheptadine hydrochloride) is sometimes used as an appetite stimulant but not hydroxyzine.
