Black Tongue: Black 'hairy' tongue can be caused by lengthening of the bumps on the end of the tongue, or papillae. They are often rubbed away with eating but can become longer and get stained by food or tobacco products. Pepto bismol (bismuth subsalicylate) can also cause the appearance of a black tongue within 24 hours of use.

Often nutrition: Darl discoloration of the tongue can be due to many things. The color is due to the swelling and drying of the very small buds (papillae) on the tongue. As they dry out, they change color. Tobacco use is a common cause as is anything that affects the saliva such as medications and vitamins.
