It depends: Heart failure symptoms typically are worse lying down at night because blood which is held down in the legs during the daytime hours will flow out of the legs into the central part of the body, thereby putting a greater workload on the heart. However, usually the symptoms would lessen with sitting up.

Lying down: Symptoms of hf worsen at night as you assume a supine posture. The supine posture ("lying down") causes fluid that was stored in the lower extremity veins to return back to the heart and can cause the lungs to get congested. Sitting up and keeping your legs dependent, or better still standing up, would lessen the symptoms.
