After 1st trimester: Late pregnancy termination, or d&e, occurs after the first trimester. It is done if there are complications or severe defects in the pregnancy or sometimes done electively. It is a more challenging procedure than a 1st trimester pregnancy termination and carries a higher risk of surgical complications such as bleeding.
