What is late pregnancy termination?

After 1st trimester: Late pregnancy termination, or d&e, occurs after the first trimester. It is done if there are complications or severe defects in the pregnancy or sometimes done electively. It is a more challenging procedure than a 1st trimester pregnancy termination and carries a higher risk of surgical complications such as bleeding.

Late term abortion: A late-term abortion often refers to an induced abortion procedure that occurs after the 20th week of gestation. The exact point when a pregnancy becomes late-term, however, is not clearly defined. Some sources define an abortion after 16 weeks as "late".
