Depends on history: Patients who have normal blood flow in the artery then suddenly develop a complete blockage of an artery in a limb need emergent treatment to prevent limb loss or amputation. Patients who have smoked, have diabetes, a history of heart disease or family history of vascular disease can have narrowings and blockages develop more gradually without severe symptoms and not need urgent procedures.
