What risks are associated with getting a third dose of mmr vaccination?

Rare if any: The MMR&MMRII vaccine presently in use in the US has now been followed for >25 years & 200 million doses.Severe reactions are quite rare. Those allergic to the antibiotic neomycin should avoid the vaccine. Those with transient drop in platelet count after previous doses will likely repeat. In most patients, the minor discomfort of the vaccine will have no adverse outcome.

A third MMR is safe: If a child or teen has no documaentation of having had 2 doses of the required MMR vaccine then it is safe to give a third dose of mmr. They are at no higher risk of fever or rash following a 3rd MMR compared with patients receiving their 1st or 2nd mmr. If a child does not have a record having 2 doses of MMR it is recommended they are vaccinated to ensure they have at least 2 doses of vaccine.
