+ reinforcement: Each parent has different strategies in handling an adolescents rebellious streak. If they have true nicotine addition, nicotine replacement like nicorette (nicotine gum) can help. If this an issue of rebellion, set ground rules that there is no tobacco in the home. And if you or someone in your home smokes, set a good example and stop yourself. Getting angry with the child may only aggravate the situation.

Discuss with them: Discuss smoking with them and figure out why they are smoking- try to replace the smoking habit with something else. A technique called motivational interviewing can be very effective- this is a way of discussing the issue in such a manner that the individual begins to motivate themselves to make a change.
