Sciatica: Your description is consistent with a lumbar nerve root irritation and likely, both back and leg are related. Question of ruptured disc, lumbar spondylosis, stenosis, foramenal encroachment. Mri films should give answers. Get examined and treated.

Likely: The nerves that travel down the lower extremities share the same roots as the ones which travel to the muscles of the back. So yes, there is a relation. Back pain has many causes and depending on the scenario, more than one problem may be present.
