A member asked:

Why sugar (glucose) can be used by mouth as a treatment for hyperkalemic periodic paralysis?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Insulin & potassium: Hyperkalemia is having too much potassium in your blood. Eating sugar causes you body to secrete insulin. The Insulin helps the sugar to pass into your cells. In doing so, it also pulls in potassium, helping to correct the hyperkalemia.
