A member asked:

What is hypoparathyroidism? what's the treatment to this? how is it connected to hypokalemic periodic paralysis and renal disease? please answer.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Low parathyroid horm: Parathyroid glands make a hormone that regulates calcium in the blood. Damage from thyroid surgery or autoimmune disease are main causes. Severe muscle spasm is the chief symptom. High doses of calcium & vit D+ magnesium, is the treatment. No hormone replacement is yet available. Not connected to periodic paralysis. Rx. can cause kidney stones and could lead to renal failure, not common.
