Calcium with vita D: Osteoporosis needs to be treated up prevent fractures. You need up start calcium with vitamin d 500/200 2-3x/ day plus a medicine called Fosamax or one in its class to adequately treat osteoporosis . A DEXA scan should be done after a year of treatment initiation. Increase in physical activity will help bone remodeling.

New info.: For osteoporosis, recent data suggests those who get their calcium from calcium-rich foods benefit more. In addition, one should have their vitamin d level checked and see a dr. Familiar with vitamin k deficiency (osteocalcin might be checked regarding this). Vitamin k deficiency might be the link between osteoporosis and arteriosclerosis. Calcium will help.: For osteoporosis, it's weight bearing exercise, calcium and vitamin D3 supplementation, keep your weight down. Medications when necessary would include Fosamax, Actonel or Boniva (ibandronate). You'd need bone density tests every two to three years after you reach the menopause and treat more aggressively with medications dependent on the results.
