Dr. Richard Roberts answered

Specializes in Pediatrics

Autosomal recessve: genetic disorder; both parents are carriers of a rare mutation, causing the syndrome in about 1:200,000 children. The two forms prevent cellular "housecleaning" of long sugar molecules normally broken down in our cells, resulting in damage to various organs, particularly bone, stunting growth and deforming facies. Intelligence is normal. see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/001
