A 45-year-old member asked:

is it rare for teenagers to have macular degeneration?

Dr. David Chandler
Ophthalmology 33 years experience
Very rare: The common type of macular degeneration is called amd, standing for "age-related macular degeneration", and the age is old age, usually over 60. However, there are rarer conditions of the retina that can lead to degeneration. Stargardt's disease, retinitis pigmentosa, pattern dystrophies of the retinal pigment epithelium, retinal cone dystrophies, and familial drusen can affect teens.
Dr. Keshav Narain

Many: Age related macular degeneration (amd) is a leading cause of visual loss in the elderly population. Treatment depends on type and severity of amd. The symptoms are highly variable also: mild to moderate blurring in central areas of vision, distortion of images, haziness. There is a familial form of macular degeneration as well.

Several: The lions club in major cities runs a 'low vision clinic' with a selection of visual aids. It will depend upon your needs as to what is best for you and they have samples to try. There is also a new electronic device which looks like an iphone which you place on the print and it enlarges the image on the screen facing you. The lions can help you with this also.

If the pressure...: ...Is from you, then don't apply the pressure. If the pressure is from another family member, speak with them about your concerns. If the pressure is from peers, there's nothing you can do about it. You can, however, discuss this with your kids so they know you support them and so they have the strength to cope.

Born wrong body: Gender identity disorder is when one feels as if they have been born the wrong gender. People with gid typically feel this way from early childhood but it may get worse in adolescence as secondary sex traits appear.
