Can you recommend magnifiers for macular degeneration?

Dr. David Kira
Ophthalmology 21 years experience
Yes: Depends upon the severity of visual loss. For lower levels, using readers with increased power and occasionally a tint can help. Remember though, the higher the magnification the less you will see at one time. At higher powers, assessment by a low-vision specialist can help. They can recommend cctv or other visual aids.

Contrast is key...: People with macular degeneration who have relatively good vision remaining oftentimes have problems with reading. This can arise from blurring and most importantly from loss of contrast. Halogen lamps work well since they are bright and improve contrast as well as some lens tints. Be sure optimize the angle of the light to minimize glare.
