Depends on duration: Prednisone is a type of steroid used to treat a diverse number of conditions. When used for short courses (up to a few weeks) for conditions such as croup, asthma, and allergic reactions, it is very safe except for stomach upset and possible behavior changes. Used long term (months) for things like rheumatologic conditions can cause diabetes, osteoporosis, fat gain, and increased infections.

Prednison effect: Steroids are used for various medical conditions. Using for short course like 3-5 days doesnot carry much of side effect. Prolong use can increase risk of cataracts, blood sugar problems, weight gain and increase risk of infections.
