Mental health eval.: Trying to make an accurate psychiatric diagnosis on a loved one is frought with obstacles. Psychiatrists go through 8 years of training after college to learn to do this - so it requires expertise. Being emotionally close to the person automatically impacts how we see them. If you are concerned that someone you care about has a mental disorder, consider encouraging a professional evaluation.

Psychiatry: If you are concerned, request a visit with the family md, if agreeable. Consent is necessary for confidentiality. Explain your concerns to the md or family member in a supportive fashion to avoid resistance or denial. Medical problems sometimes appear first as mental illness. Referral to s psychiatrist for evaluation may follow, if needed.
