A member asked:

How did doctors used to diagnose mental illness? is it the same process we use now?

Dr. Alan Koenigsberg answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

Yes: We still use the clinical interview as the mainstay for Psychiatric diagnosis, much as well have done for over one hundred years. There are as yet no objective diagnostic laboratory tests used in clinical practice to definitely diagnose any Psychiatric Illnesses. It takes an experienced Psychiatrist time and collaboration to formulate an accurate diagnosis.
