A member asked:

Why is ankle fusion performed if it is not related to ankle arthritis? what are the main reasons? recovery time? how long are you in a cast?

See below: Chronic pain would be the major reason for ankle fusion. Cast for approx 12weeks up to 1 year for total healing.

Ankle pain: Pain in the ankle, secondary to cartilage deterioration (arthritis) develops with motion. If you eliminate the motion in the joint, pain will no longer be present. The downside is no ankle motion. A cast with either screws or frame is used for a period of approximately 8 weeks. At approximately the 8th week, weight bearing is encouraged if the bone is showing evidence of healing (x-rays).
