Strontium, Vit D3: Fosamax (alendronate) and related drugs for osteoporosis may do more harm than good. I recommend a broad spectrum multi-mineral supplement, high-dose vit d3 (5-10, 000 iu per day), plus strontium (as carbonate or citrate) available from a health food store, in doses of 600 mg per day. Strontium has been demonstrated to significantly increase bone density and strength. Also, weight training will help.

Depends: It is not at all uncommon for middle aged women to have bone density changes. A long talk with your md should inform you to the risks and benefits of the medications currently available. Good luck!

Not necessary: Medications are never necessary. We only make recommendations. Your doc is trying to reduce your risk of future bone fracture. Risk should be calculated using the frax tool at http://www.Shef.Ac.Uk/frax/ best treatment for declining bone density is good diet ( vit d about 1000 iu.Day and ca about 600 mg twice a day) and regular weight bearing exercise.
