See below: The possibilities are likely a primary problem with the shoulder itself or perhaps a radiating pain from the neck which can be caused by discs, pinched nerves or arthritis in the joints of the neck. If it generally is worse when you raise your arm, it is probably the shoulder, but only a good physical examination by a musculoskeletal doctor (orthopedist or physiatrist) should answer the question.
