Where and how large?: Most "growths" in the lung are unable to cause pain because the lung has no pain nerves. If a mass is large enough and located near the chest wall or apex of the lung, it can invade the pleura where there are many nerves and the pain can be constant, severe, and located in an area where pain refers to other parts of the chest and upper body.
