Multiple causes: Steroids are very helpful for a vasculitis and some allergic and autoimmune hives. Lower sedating antihistamines such as Cetirizine (zyrtec) can often be very useful. Antibiotics can cause hives as long as two weeks after completing the antibiotic but can persist for 6 months. If hives persist for 6 weeks, physicians most of the time do not have an answer. Most long term hives are autoimmune.
