Maybe an STD: Brown spotting could be blood. That may suggest that there is inflammation on your cervix. Stds like chlamydia, gonorrhea & others can cause spotting between periods. If this was a new partner or if it's not a monogamous situation, consider std testing through sexualhealth.Com or through a local provider or std clinic. Other things can cause spotting, so if no answer on testing, follow up w/ pcp.
