i have a lot of pain on the outside of my ankle. now on the same leg, back side of the thigh i have pain off and on. could this be a pinch nerve ?

Yes! Most Likely!: What you are describing is most likely sciatica. Sciatica is pain caused by a herniated disk either in the lower back or the buttock. When it affects both the ankle and the back of the thigh it is probably involving both the L5 (lumbar), and the s1 (sacral), nerve roots. You should see your physician, as further work-up may be needed. Conservative treatment can be very effective, so don't delay.
